Purple Gem is a compact, mounded rhododendron with small blue-green leaves that turn bronze in cold weather. In mid-spring it covers itself in clear violet-purple flowers, often before the rest of the garden has woken up. It is a natural fit for Pacific Northwest gardens, where acidic soil and mild, damp winters suit it perfectly. Use it in front of taller shrubs, along a shady foundation bed, or in a large container.
