Thick, woody stems, glossy oval leaves, and a shape like a miniature tree: the jade plant is a long-lived classic that can be passed down through generations with a little care. It stores water in its leaves, so it shrugs off dry spells, and it grows steadily toward the light. Ours are rooted from healthy cuttings and arrive branched and sturdy in a 5" pot. Give it a bright window and a gritty mix and it will slowly develop a thick trunk. Jade plant is toxic to cats and dogs if eaten, so keep it out of their reach.
