Round, sculptural, and covered in golden spines, the golden barrel cactus is a living piece of desert art. It grows slowly into a symmetrical globe that ages beautifully, and it asks for very little beyond a very sunny window and a gritty, fast-draining mix. Ours are seed-grown in the greenhouse and arrive firm and evenly colored in a 5" pot. Give it as much direct sun as you can, and water only when the soil is fully dry. Handle it with care; the spines are sharp, so keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
